It would have seemed improbable a generation ago, but the UK is one of the most exciting emerging winemaking countries on the planet. It’s now accepted wisdom (here and abroad) that the best English sparkling wines can hold a candle to top-quality Champagne, but the latest development is in still wines, especially Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, grown not on chalk soils, but a little further north-east, in Essex, on smectite clay. Warmer temperatures during the growing season, but also an influx of investment and winemaking know-how – including from Burgundy – means there’s every reason to think these wines will continue to get better and better.
